    POSTCARD 1909
    Death of Captain Carlo De Cristoforis at the battle of San Fermo 1859
    51st Regg. Fanteria
    Capitano Carlo De Cristoforis
    In 1859 he went to Italy to fight for the second war of Independence, but the Piedmontese general believed him a subversive and did not admit him to the regular army.
    He then enlisted as a mere captain company commander in the Cacciatori delle Alpi.
    He fell heroically at the battle of San Fermo on May 27, 1859 at the age of thirty-four, while at the head of his men he led a bayonet  assault  towards a well-defended Austrian post.
    He died in the arms of his brother
    who he had not seen since 1853.
